I’m Anna Sale, an interviewer and writer likened by The New York Times to “a therapist at happy hour.”

Since 2014, I’ve hosted Death, Sex & Money, the interview podcast about “the things we think about a lot and need to talk about more.” The show was produced for many years at WNYC, and after a “funeral” covered by The New Yorker, the show was reborn at Slate in 2024. 

In 2026, I launched People Trying, a new video series and newsletter about those of us who work close to land, water, and nature as we’re all adapting to change. People Trying is a journalism project produced in collaboration with National Geographic Society with support from the Walton Family Foundation’s Environment Program.

My 2021 book, Let's Talk About Hard Things, is a mix of memoir, reporting and how-to that The New Yorker said "shows us how supportive listening happens." I’ve also contributed to This American Life, Fresh Air, The New York Times and The Atlantic and hosted national call-in radio specials and on-stage interviews and variety shows at SF Sketchfest, Tribeca Festival, the Commonwealth Club of California, the Shed, the Castro Theater, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

I grew up in West Virginia and studied history at Stanford University. I am raising my two daughters in Berkeley, California, and Cody, Wyoming, with my husband Arthur, a wildlife ecologist.
